Grower's Choice

Philodendron Squamicaule, native to Panama, Nicaragua, Ecuador, and Colombia, is a hemi-epiphytic species. The term "Squamicaule" in Latin translates to 'scaly stem,' a reference to the salmon pink petioles adorned with hair-like scales.

This Philodendron is distinguished by its impressive petioles, enhancing the appeal of its sizable green leaves. Notably, the leaves feature reddish lateral veins, contributing to a captivating and dramatic appearance.

Ideal for hardiness zones 9 to 11, Philodendron Squamicaule showcases its unique charm in diverse climates.

Optimal care for Philodendron Squamicaule involves providing bright, indirect sunlight or artificial light. Maintain humidity levels between 70 to 80%, utilizing well-draining soil with a pH range of 6 to 7, incorporating perlite, peat moss, bark, and organic materials.

Philodendron Squamicaule flourishes in temperatures ranging from 60ᵒF to 85ᵒF (16ᵒC – 29ᵒC). Soil pH should remain neutral, ideally between 6 and 7, and ensure adequate drainage with a mix of organic components, perlite, and peat moss.

While Philodendron Squamicaule benefits from bright, indirect sunlight, limited exposure to direct morning sunlight is acceptable. Pruning is recommended, particularly for removing dead leaves. Ensure sanitation by cleaning equipment with rubbing alcohol and washing hands before handling.

When pruning, follow these steps:

  1. Sanitize equipment with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Wash hands before handling.
  3. Pinch back unwanted new growth.
  4. During the spring season, trim tips of stems to control size.
  5. Pruning stimulates growth, making it beneficial for maintaining size or encouraging a larger plant.
